About the Event

Join us (THE directors Ashley and Allie) as we explore modern movement and dance.

The concept of the class stems through time and innate movements that we all possess. Modern Dance itself gained momentum in the 1900’s in rebellion of strict ballet programs. The basis for most genres of dance is ballet and we will touch on some of the basic concepts, but we will encourage the class to let go of what they think dance HAS to be and lead them to move as a compliment to their yoga practice.

We all have dance in our heritage dating back to the beginning of time. The ancient Mayans used dance as a bridge between this world and the beyond. The ancient Egyptians thought that dance was integral to creation and communication with the gods and, further, were the human response to the gift of life. Ancient Sub Saharan African dance was used for religious, ceremonial, and storytelling purposes. It was featured in every part of life and shared by the whole tribe. Dance was and is like breathing, like water. It keeps us moving through the moment, through a space, and through life.

During the class we will encourage the students to move through the room and their own space as they feel in that moment. The class will be an hour and a half. It will consist of a warm-up, modern stretch, progressions around the room, group dances, and moments for individual reflection. We will show modifications for all levels of experience and abilities. No need for a mat or shoes for this workshop. We want the class to use their yoga training and experience to move, create, and dance. As Martha Graham the “Mother of modern dance” said, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body.”
